A diffractive method to probe people’s perspectives on AI with generative deep learning. The use case is GANspire, a deep learning tool that generates breathing waveforms, and its prospective applications in clinical contexts. We produced a probe with different materials generated with GANspire, and asked a group of ten respiratory care experts to annotate it. The practice helped experts share their perceptions and expectations on AI, by sensitively engaging with it. The work broadens how generative deep learning may be approached not only as a tool to design human-computer interactions, but also as a probe to provoke open conversations with communities of practice about the ethics and speculative uses of AI technology.
