A qualitative study on participatory AI design with sound professionals. The use case is digital interfaces for sound design, whose large number of parameters often restrain exploration in creativity. We first led semi-structured interviews with expert sound designers to learn more about their exploration processes, and observe their reactions to an early AI prototype. We then led two workshops with an interactive AI, called Co-Explorer, which implements their expert reactions. The study illuminates how sound designers appreciate balancing agencies with AI along exploration, and how integrating AI within existing digital sound interfaces benefit their creative work.
