Mer is a transmedia music duo formed in 2016 with Adèle Pécout.
The duo’s compositions collide metaphorical lyrics anchored in French chanson with concatenated textures brought up by computer music. The hybridisation materializes on stage through re-enactment of the singing voice with performative gestures using CataRT.
Mer eponymous album (2018) was accompanied by a series of photographic portraits and a web-based interactive Libretto (2020), featuring sounds, lyrics, and images coming from its eight music titles. Moving pictures were created using a machine learning algorithm, called StyleGAN (based on the RunwayML software), which we trained over body photographs of Adèle and myself, in an attempt to represent our hybridising of materials, genres, and bodies.
The project was developed with Axel Chemla—Romeu-Santos in collaboration with the w.lfg.ng collective.
